The Ghost In The Machine, Or Do Our Computers Have Souls?

It helped me write two novels and plan vacations. With it, I reached out to others with funny e-mails and condolence letters. It stayed by my side, a faithful and uncomplaining colleague, twelve hours a day, for five years.

Oh, sure, I made jokes. Towards the end, as it got slower and more finicky, I described my laptop as ‘steam powered.’ I began flirting with younger, sleeker models at the Apple store, all while saying, “It’s not personal. It’s business.”

Imagine my guilt one day last November when I brought home a shiny new MacBook. I practically apologized to my old computer as I stripped it of files to give to the replacement. Even today, my antique sits in a place of honor on my shelf. I can’t bear to send it away.

Anybody else give their electronic device a personality? You’re not alone. The Wall Street Journal on Saturday, August 28, has a thought-provoking article, “Sweet Talking Your Computer,” about how we give them personalities—and become attached to them over time.

Of course, this isn’t really a new concept. Sailors flattered their ships by referring to them as “she,” investing them with soul, rather than considering them inanimate vessels hammered and lashed together. Our cars provide another example. How many of us cajole faltering cars, begging them for one last start as we are late for work or an appointment? And what married man hasn’t kept his wife from throwing out a favorite sweatshirt?

My mother drove a 1967 blue Impala station wagon, an ugly rolling barn she named Betsy. It was a love-hate relationship between the two. When my father brought it home from the dealership, she sat on the sofa and cried.

Funny thing is, she did the same thing when he traded it in five years later.

QR Codes – An Excellent Tool For Creating Brand Exposure!

Have you seen one of these blurry squares and wondered what it was?  It’s a QR (Quick Reference) code, and you’re likely going to see more of them in the near future.

QR codes are scanable bar codes typically generated to provide instant information on a mobile device.  The best part, they can point you towards just about anything.  You can print them, digitize them, wear them, put them on a sticker and slap it on a street sign (not that we suggest this option), hang one in a store window, use them as environmentally friendly tickets, business cards, and so on and so forth….you get the idea.  If you haven’t seen one yet, you’re in luck!  In fact, we think you’ll be seeing more and more of them….everywhere!  They create unlimited options for exposure to small businesses, organizations, bands, gangs and really anything you wish to promote.

How great is that?  Answer: Super Great.

Here are a few Forté generated examples:

The real key in helping QR codes evolve, is motivating more people to download scanner apps on their mobile devices.  Without a scanner app you can not explore the coded messages you will encounter, and you will encounter them.

What fun is that? Answer: none.

From an advertising position, we get excited thinking of creative ways to incorporate the codes.  We have some really great ideas in the making, and we look forward to rolling them out shortly.  How could the use of QR Codes help your organization?  If you need help figuring this out, we’d love to help you.

Happy scanning, and happy Friday to you all!

Socially Mentioned And Honored

Today I was checking how far our online efforts are reaching and realized we were given props on Tommy Toy’s blog yesterday. More than likely we wouldn’t have seen his post so quickly, if I hadn’t run a search for Forté on socialmention.com.  I can’t express how important it is to monitor what people are saying online about you, your brand, and your products & services. In the unfortunate event that negative sentiment strolls your way, at least you’re aware and have the chance to respond accordingly.  On the other hand, if you’re receiving accolades, then you know who to thank.

THANK YOU Tommy for your post, especially The Forté Marketing Group mention!!  Please take a look at Tommy Toy’s print advertising post which features work we created for The Jimmie Hale Mission.

Greetings From New Zealand – Part 2

One of the shoot days was for a “Cold Injury” spot.  The premise is to be careful when hiking outdoors in cold weather: have the right gear, hydrate, layer up, etc.  Here are a few pictures from the location, and Forté’s very own Jamie & Chris.

You don’t find yourself on the opposite side of the globe very often, so we thought it’d be wise to have some fun while we’re here.  Really, who could blame us?

This whole experience wouldn’t be the same if it didn’t feel a little bit like home.  So after much thought on how to accomplish the “taste of home”, we decided to claim a first ever while we’re here.  Take a look and you’ll see what we mean.

This was filmed at the Snow Park, the location of the Winter Driving spot and a whole lot of fun.

Greetings From New Zealand – Part 1

What do you do Mid-July when you need snowy conditions, English speaking locals, and mountains for shooting spots?  You travel to the opposite side of the Earth to New Zealand.  Beginning last week we started scouting locations along with a team of local production “Mates”, and this week the shooting began.  So far everything has gone very well!

Here are some of our experiences thus far:

So far one of our favorite activities has been scouting for shooting locations in the mountains.  When in the snow covered mountains, scout in style, right?  We’re not sure about how “in style” snowmobiles are, but we’re positive they’re a blast to drive!!
